What You Pay on Top of a Used Car Price in California

The price on a used car is not the last number you will see. Here is what gets added in California, so there are no surprises.

Sales tax

California charges sales tax on the car. The rate depends on where the car will be registered.

DMV and government fees

Registration, title and license fees go to the state. They depend on the car and on where you live.

Doc fee

The dealer document processing charge pays for the paperwork. At NewGen Auto Sales it is $85. There can also be an electronic filing charge and an emission testing charge.

Finance charges

If you finance the car, the contract shows the finance charges and the total you will pay. Read that part before you sign.

Optional products

An extended warranty or service contract is optional. Nobody can require one to sell you the car at our dealership. Ask to see the price with and without any option.
